Finding Giant Trees in Namibia
Launched in late 2025, this project is a cross-border collaboration between the Big Trees of South Africa initiative, the Botanical Society of Namibia, and the National Botanical Research Institute (NBRI). Our goal is to identify, measure, and celebrate the extraordinary trees that define the Namibian landscape.
Why Namibia? From the ancient quiver trees of the south to the massive baobabs and riverine giants of the north, Namibia’s trees are symbols of resilience. By creating a national registry, we provide communities and tourists with a “Tree Map” to explore and appreciate these living monuments.
The Nomination Criteria
A tree can be nominated if it meets one or more of the following:
Biological Attributes
Extraordinary height, circumference, or crown width.
Age
Generally older than 100 years.
Heritage Value
Historically linked to events or specific people.
Cultural Value
Significant as a meeting place or sacred site.
Aesthetic Value
A visual landmark or a specimen of exceptional scenic beauty.
Submit a Tree
Do you know of a giant in your area? Whether it’s an ancient Fig in the north or a landmark Camel Thorn in the central savanna, we want to know about it. Use the online nomination form to share photos and GPS coordinates. Your submission will be evaluated by the Botanical Society of Namibia committee for official Champion Tree status.
